FAQs

Therapy can be availed when you want to enhance your current state of well-being or to move from a state of distress to well-being. One can seek therapy during major  transitions in life, grief, difficulty managing emotions, lack of motivation, anxiety, difficulty handling relationships, managing work-life, substance abuse, sleep issues, low mood. These are just the examples and one can seek therapy when one realises it’s beyond their capacity to handle any problems or issues.

Initial sessions will be focussed on rapport building, goals and expectation setting, exploration of the issues, understanding client’s needs, worldviews and context, and exploring client-therapist fit. Later phases of the sessions will involve holding accepting, supportive and non-judgmental space for expression, deep listening, reflection, awareness building, developing language for the issues and about self, building safety and resources within self and from environment. Later stages will include challenging patterns and behaviours, using various psychological tools and techniques to process emotions and difficult issues, taking action oriented tasks and gradually moving towards termination and follow up sessions, once the client feels ready.

Therapy is a continuous process that depends on the client’s goals. The session can be short term or long term based on needs of the client which must be discussed in the first session. However, it is suggested to take 6-7 sessions to understand the therapy process and if the therapist is the right fit for you.

Therapy journeys can be different and unique for each person and there is no set benchmark to evaluate the progress. However, some common signs that suggest therapy is working for you is, you have a safe, trusting, accepting relationship with your therapist, there are insights about yourself, your relationships and how you interact in your environment and gradually develop tools to process your emotions and issues.

Therapy, while helpful to some, might not be useful to others. In such cases, recommendations for other spaces can be made by the therapist, with the client’s consent. These spaces can be utilised alongside therapy or without therapy. For example, community listening circles, psychiatric medications, support groups.

It is recommended to have 1 hour of sessions on a weekly basis in the beginning and gradually the pace of the sessions are reduced to fortnightly/monthly. The frequency of the sessions are also dependent on the financial and time feasibility of the client which can be discussed in the first session.

The role of the therapist is to provide non-judgmental space for self-expression and self-awareness, explore safety and co-create safe space, reflect and process emotions, thoughts and behaviours, provide tools and build resources to manage difficulties and be an objective mirror of reflection.

As each individual and each problem are different, there is no “one size fits all” solution/advice to the problems. Rather than solving the problem, a therapist will equip you to deal with the issues that you face in life through resource building, self-awareness and a strong therapeutic relationship that is accepting and warm.

Dependency in therapy is unlikely as therapists do not give advice on how to live your life. Therapy is a safe  exploration space to build resources, insights, and tools to manage the difficulties which in turn leads to self-reliance, acceptance  and empowerment.

Therapists will spend time with you in understanding your worldview and perspectives in an accepting and non-judgmental way. Therapists will also be mindful of your socio-cultural and political background.
